| Sumario: | This article provides an analysis of the representations of love in three popular Hollywood romantic drama films produced in the late 20th and early 21st centuries: Titanic (1997), The Notebook (2004), and La La Land (2016). Drawing on contributions from sociology and theoretical currents such as the cultural turn and the affective turn, the study is structured into three parts: first, it explores the variations in representations of love according to the sociocultural context of each film’s plot; then, it examines the elements of various historical love traditions in the West present in each film; and finally, it describes and analyzes the main characters and their relationships. The study’s findings reveal the existence of four pertinent categories emerging from the corpus: variations based on historical context; the coexistence of different historical love traditions; the presence of romantic myths and fantasies; and the relationships between female and male archetypes. This comprehensive approach allows for an understanding of how these films both reflect and shape perceptions of love across different times and sociocultural contexts. |
