| Sumario: | Since 2017, in our team led by Hilda Albano, PhD, we have investigated the semantic and syntactic characteristics of verbs to elaborate a «Dictionary of verbs in Spanish from the perspective of the plot. A general reflection on the syntactic, lexical and semantic nature of verbs». Our work aims to provide a contribution in relation to the sensitive difficulties that may arise for a translator, at the level of the interface between lexical semantics and syntax when translating into Spanish. We start from the idea that the meaning of the words determines their syntactic representation, we observe, then, that many translators have doubts about the correct ways of expressing a concept in Spanish and hesitate about the degree of acceptability or grammaticality that it manifests in the translated sentences. For example, given the expression: The glass was broken, should it be translated «el vaso se rompió» or «el vaso estaba roto»? It is likely that few prefer to say «el vaso fue roto», but do translators have enough tools to explain why they discard this option? We believe that this material can facilitate, in particular for translators and teachers, the understanding of the interface between syntax and semantics since it is the semantics of the verb that determines the syntactic components that account for the good formation of a sentence. |
