Sumario:In order to contribute to the reflection on the process of recognition of translation as a practice that promotes reading and favors the internationalization of books in Chile, we have conducted an exploratory study whose objective is to describe the contribution of translation to national policies for the promotion of reading and books. The study corpus is made up of the three national policies for the promotion of reading and books (2006-2010, 2015-2020 and 2023-2028) and some complementary documents. Data collection is based on the contexts in which the terms “translation” and “translator” appear in the corpus and, through content analysis, categories and patterns of the contribution of translation to the promotion of reading and books are described. Among the results, we highlight the recognition of translators as professionals in the ecosystem of reading and books; the contribution of translation to the process of internationalization of books; and the need to offer support through competitive funds for the promotion of translations from foreign languages into Spanish and from Spanish into other languages.
