Sumario:This article takes up reflections started decades ago on the definitions of what is conceived and lived as work; and what is defined and recognized as social needs. First, the notion of work and its scope and place in society are developed, to understand what its need is. Next, the relationship between subsistence and social needs is reviewed, to return to the work necessary to sustain social life. Finally, it reflects on the relationship of these fundamental categories —needs and work— in the foundations of social policy and its dilemmas.
