| Sumario: | In this paper we present a comparative study of the rock shelters identified in the North Coast of Santa Cruz (Patagonia Argentina) from a systematic survey program of this type of sites, both on the coast and in the intermediate zone inland. Some contextual, natural and archaeological variables were recorded for each rock-shelter in order to analyse and compare various aspects of interest. Thus 38 rock shelters were surveyed, 26 of which provided archaeological evidence, including five with rock art. Rock shelters are located in a relatively limited study area, between the river basin and the Deseado estuary and to the coast in the south, almost all of them associated to ignimbrite outcrops. Evidences obtained so far, reflects low archaeological densities in most rock-shelters. In this sense, scarce faunal remains and a succession of small and discrete hearths were found, suggesting low intensity events of occupation. |
