In his own words, "I held every position except that of head of practical work". He is a full member of the National Academy of Economic Sciences and was president of the Argentinean Association of Political Economy. Porto nació en Lincoln, provincia de Buenos Aires, el 20 de marzode 1942. Con Elsa Amiano, fallecida en 1998, tuvieron 3 hijos, uno de los cuales no es economista. Alberto tiene 8 nietos. Cursó todos sus estudios enla Facultad de Ciencias Económicas de la Universidad Nacional de la Plata,donde también desarrollo prácticamente la totalidad de su carrera académica.Según sus propias palabras, “ocupé todos los puestos menos el de jefe detrabajos prácticos”.
