Sumario:The work explores and evaluates the trajectory of these forty years of democracy with a longitudinal and comparative perspective. It analyzes, first, the available evidence about the consolidation of democracy and, also, the probability of an autocratic drift in this country. Second, it studies the behavior of the party system, in terms of its fragmentation, polarization and personalization. It is concluded that democracy and its parties may not generate ecstasy and enthusiasm; but in no way can these forty years be considered a failure.
