Sumario:Much has already been produced about the different actions of the Ignatians in Portuguese America, and the various motives for their expulsion. However, little importance has yet been given to the analysis of sources which depict the economic aspects of the order, and which were used as grounds for expulsion in 1759. The aim of this paper is to discuss about the strong economical power of the Companhia de Jesus's priests, in order to verify the existence of this financial power and how it acted towards providing greater jurisdiction to the religious.
