The treatment of social class follows David Block’s model of categories and dimensions to discuss the way in which social class differences are represented in De Mello’s lyrics, and how that representation is articulated with the local language repertoire, particularly in reference to the so-called Portuñol. The language ideological work that Chito de Mello builds to link Portuñol with the dominated classes shows this variety as a disputed resource in contemporary Riverense society. Este artículo analiza el vínculo entre clase social y lenguaje en la obra del cantautor uruguayo Chito de Mello, oriundo de Rivera, en la frontera uruguaya con Brasil. El tratamiento de clase social sigue el modelo de categorías y dimensiones de David Block con el fin de discutir la manera en que las diferencias de clase social son representadas en las letras de canciones de De Mello y cómo se articula esa representación con el repertorio lingüístico fronterizo, en particular en referencia al llamado portuñol. El trabajo ideológico de lenguaje que Chito de Mello construye para asociar al portuñol a las clases dominadas muestra a esta variedad como un recurso en disputa en la sociedad riverense contemporánea.
