Sumario:We report results from planialtimetric, architectural and excavation surveys carried out at El Carmen 1, located in Santa Maria valley, on the eastern slope of the Cajon hill (District of Tafí, Tucumán province). Considering its location, materials and construction techniques employed, as well as ceramic material recovered from surface and excavation, and radiocarbon dates obtained, the site of El Carmen 1 was identified as a village inhabited during the second half of the Late Intermediate period. Sectors surveyed correspond to an extensive and predominantly mountainous area along which marked functional differences are revealed by its architecture: dwelling structures, defensive architecture and roads. Data collected thus contribute to the knowledge of the archaeological record of large Calchaquí settlements during the fourteenth century of the Era.
