Sumario:The article presents the results of a doctoral thesis in Educational Sciences, which investigates rural high school education and a particular formative experience in a rural school with a mixed hostel as part of its educational proposal. The methodology takes a socio-anthropological perspective, with an ethnographic approach. This communication considers the rural high school shelter as a key element in the decisions that families and young people from rural contexts make for their school career; and it focuses on the practices and meanings that students and preceptors build around their first year in the hostel.
