| Sumario: | The research’s objective is to know if the new non-contributory pension benefit for people over 65 years old is effective in reducing poverty levels for that group. It compares elderly people poverty risk in 2012 and 2018 using the Family Income and Expenditure Household Survey, disaggregating elderly people in different social groups according to gender, urban-rural location, ethnicity, economic status, and educational level to know if poverty reduction is different by social groups. The paper begins with an analysis of the structure of social security provision in Mexico, and the design of the non-contributory pension program. After that it presents the results of this research and the conclusions. |
