Sumario:This article reconstructs the distinct episodes that make up the 2014 self-defense conflict in Michoacán by using strategy analysis. Emphasis is placed on the actors’ reasons and motivations that drive their strategies in this conflict, particularly the Tierra Caliente self-defense groups’ and the federal government’s. Static game theory is used to achieve this. Based on a historical interpretation of the actors’ preferences, the article shows that the outcome of this case study is explained by the division of self-defense groups into pragmatic and non-pragmatic ones, as well as by the efforts of the Federal Government to subdue the autonomous character of some self-defense groups. In theoretical terms, this analysis demonstrates that agreements, disagreements and confrontations are the product of the interaction of the various motivations, selfish and non-selfish, that drive the actors’ strategies.
