This article presents the first academic approach to the figure of diocesan priest Jorge Álvarez Calderón (1930-2020), a key figure in the intellectual community of theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez and in the dissemination of liberation theology in Peru. First, it explains the historiographical debate and the historical context of the relationship between liberation Catholicism and social movements in Peru. Then it situates Álvarez Calderón’s leadership within this political-religious context. Second, this article analyzes the representations of popular culture in five articles by Álvarez Calderón published in the journal Páginas, a publication for analysis and opinion by Peruvian liberationist intellectuals and activists. These articles aimed to cultivate a mystique of Catholic militancy in the context of the 1980s, a period characterized by changes in the relationship between the state and grassroots social organizations, as well as challenges to the orthodoxy of Gustavo Gutiérrez’s ideas. These texts are a window into the theological and political language employed by the intellectual community surrounding Gutiérrez to construct a narrative that highlights the pastoral and spiritual nature of the liberation theology project in Peru and defends its distinctive personality from ideological banners or political parties. |

El artículo es una primera aproximación académica a la figura del sacerdote diocesano Jorge Álvarez Calderón (1930-2020), actor fundamental de la comunidad intelectual del teólogo Gustavo Gutiérrez y de la propagación de la teología de la liberación en el Perú. En primer lugar, se explica el debate historiográfico y el contexto histórico de la relación entre el catolicismo de la liberación y los movimientos sociales en el Perú para, luego, situar el liderazgo de Álvarez Calderón en esta configuración político-religiosa. En segundo lugar, se analiza las representaciones de lo popular en cinco artículos de Álvarez Calderón aparecidos en la revista Páginas, órgano de análisis y opinión de los intelectuales y activistas liberacionistas peruanos, en los cuales se buscaba alimentar una mística de la militancia católica en el contexto de los años 1980 caracterizados por cambios en la relación entre Estado y organizaciones sociales de base y de cuestionamientos a la ortodoxia de las ideas de Gustavo Gutiérrez. Estos textos son una ventana para aproximarse al lenguaje teológico-político y las estrategias de la comunidad intelectual alrededor de Gutiérrez empleados para construir una narrativa que subrayase el carácter pastoral y espiritual del proyecto de la teología de la liberación en el Perú y defender su personalidad diferenciada de banderas ideológicas o partidos políticos. Este artigo é uma primeira exploração académica da figura do padre diocesano Jorge Álvarez Calderón (1930-2020), figura-chave na comunidade intelectual do teólogo Gustavo Gutiérrez e na divulgação da teologia da libertação no Peru. Em primeiro lugar, explica o debate historiográfico e o contexto histórico da relação entre o catolicismo da libertação e os movimentos sociais no Peru, e, de seguida, situa a liderança de Álvarez Calderón dentro desta configuração político-religiosa. Em segundo lugar, analisa as representações da cultura popular em cinco artigos de Álvarez Calderón publicados na revista Páginas, uma publicação de análise e opinião de intelectuais e ativistas libertários peruanos. Estes artigos procuravam cultivar uma mística da militância católica no contexto da década de 1980, período caracterizado por mudanças na relação entre o Estado e as organizações sociais de base e por questionamentos à ortodoxia das ideias de Gustavo Gutiérrez. Estes textos são uma janela para abordar a linguagem teológico-política e as estratégias da comunidade intelectual em torno de Gutiérrez, utilizadas para construir uma narrativa que enfatizava o carácter pastoral e espiritual do projeto de teologia da libertação no Peru e defendia a sua personalidade distinta das bandeiras ideológicas ou dos partidos políticos.
