Sumario:Civil society has become a privileged interlocutor and important recipient for the discourse and practices of the multilateral development banks (MDB). Taking this new outstanding role as its starting point, this work analyzes the characterizations of civil society that are used in the documents of the IDB and the WB. The first section reconstructs, from a theoretical point of view, some of the appeals to civil society in recent political contexts. The second section points out the ways in which civil society is incorporated into the discourse of the MDB. The third section offers a reflection on the consequences of the identification between civil society and NGO networks, as well as on the need for a more differentiated and complex characterization of that concept.
