description This paper starts by considering the state of the art of historical studies on the port of La Plata, which highlight two problematic issues: the difficulties of the initial project in its construction and the competition that the port of Buenos Aires represented for its development. We recover those contributions and the statistical data they provide in order to put them in dialogue with a new theoretical framework aimed at understanding the port of La Plata within the dynamics of the Pampean and Atlantic space insofar as its performance is not only explained by its relationship with the port of Buenos Aires but with a broader historical process that involves the development of the Argentine economy. We develop our argument by making available historical series that allow us to visualize that the movement of the port of La Plata grows during the first half of the twentieth century forming a type of port economy in connection with other maritime and river regions. In this regard, we present the performance of items linked to energy, such as coal, oil and its derivatives; cereals, such as flax, wheat and corn; and livestock products processed by the meat processing industry. We consider it relevant that, in addition to making up the bulk of the port movement, these economic activities were significant for the regional development of the cities of La Plata, Berisso and Ensenada. Finally, considering that these elements contribute to a new historical characterization of the port of La Plata, we outline aspects that we consider relevant to consider the current situation of this port in the context of its recent history.

Este trabajo parte de considerar el estado de la cuestión de los estudios históricos que tuvieron como tema al puerto de La Plata, los cuales destacan dos cuestiones problemáticas: las dificultades del proyecto inicial en su construcción y la competencia que representó el puerto de Buenos Aires para su desarrollo. Recuperamos aquellos aportes y los datos estadísticos que proporcionan, para ponerlos en diálogo con un nuevo marco teórico orientado a comprender al puerto de La Plata dentro de las dinámicas del espacio pampeano y atlántico, en tanto que su desempeño no se explicaría solamente por su relación con el puerto de Buenos Aires sino con un proceso histórico de mayor alcance que incumbe al desenvolvimiento de la economía argentina. Desarrollamos nuestro argumento poniendo a disposición series históricas que permiten visualizar que el movimiento del puerto de La Plata crece durante la primera mitad del siglo XX conformando un tipo de economía portuaria en vinculación con otras regiones marítimas y fluviales. Al respecto, presentamos el desempeño de rubros vinculados a las energías, como el carbón mineral, el petróleo y sus derivados; cereales, como lino, trigo y maíz; y productos ganaderos procesados por la industria frigorífica. Consideramos relevante que, además de conformar el grueso del movimiento portuario, tales actividades económicas fueron significativas para el desarrollo regional de las ciudades de La Plata, Berisso y Ensenada. Finalmente, a partir de considerar que estos elementos aportan a una nueva caracterización histórica del puerto de La Plata esbozamos aspectos que consideramos relevantes para considerar la situación actual de este puerto en el contexto de su historia reciente.
