Sumario:The article analyses the potencial of working on local history, memory and cultural heritage projects with popular shantytown through the analysis of the Chilean experience of building local shantytown histories and the methodological proposal developed, since 2016, by the program "Memorias de Chuchunco" (Department of History, University of Santiago de Chile). To do this, the article analyzes the emergence of local shantytown histories in Santiago de Chile and the links with Nongovernmental Organizations and universities from the 1980s to the present day. Then, it reflects on the potential and challenges of working on historical memory and local history in conjunction between population organizations and public universities and, finally, participatory methodological guidelines are developed to develop projects of critical extension for the development of Local Shantytown Histories.
