Sumario:The article describes the progress of the demographic transition in rural areas of Latin America and its impact on the dynamics of family farming in the continent, highlighting the presence of this issue from the contribution of Chayanov. It then evaluates the relationship between demographic dynamics and the topics of debate that appear in the literature on family farming, in particular the characteristics of the "new rurality", the issue of gender and the empowerment of women and the issue of intergenerational transfer of productive units. The demographic context appears as one of the factors that condition the evolution of family farming.
