The implementation of simple and planned strategies, during the design phase, achieve a significant adaptability, reducing operating costs. The purpose of this research is to report the current context of housing adaptability, understanding how the theme is being treated in the scientific environment. We seek to understand if recent technologies and ways of living bring a new reflection on adaptability. To this end, were surveyed peer-reviewed international scientific publications from the 21st century in English language. Papers are divided according to the main topic, in order to cross-refer pertinent data and create a meaningful discussion contemporary. We note there is no consensus on the concept of adaptability, as well as a lack of advantages and disadvantages knowledge on design strategies. Among them are the costs, technologies, and social aspects, which represents a barrier to propagate adaptability. Therefore, conciliate construction professionals and their communication with clients is essential to disseminate adaptability. A possibilidade de alterar as atividades e funções no interior da habitação, assim como reorganizar fisicamente os seus cômodos, permite que a construção se transforme para atender de modo mais adequado os seus usuários. A implementação de estratégias simples e previamente planejadas, incrementam o grau de adaptabilidade a ser alcançado e reduzem os custos de execução. O objetivo desta investigação é apresentar o contexto atual da adaptabilidade na habitação e perceber como o tema está sendo tratado no meio científico. Busca-se compreender se as tecnologias recentes e a diversificação nos modos de habitar trazem uma nova reflexão sobre a adaptabilidade. Para isto, foram levantadas publicações científicas internacionais com revisão em pares, pertencentes ao século XXI na língua inglesa. Os artigos levantados são divididos de acordo com o tema principal, de modo a cruzar dados pertinentes sobre o assunto e criar uma discussão significativa contemporânea. Observa-se que, além de não existir um consenso sobre a conceituação de adaptabilidade, há uma carência na compreensão das vantagens e desvantagens das estratégias de projeto. Entre eles os custos, tecnologias e aspectos socais, o que representa uma barreira para a sua propagação.
