Sumario:This article examines the role of railroad companies in promoting housing in Argentina between the crisis of1890 and the aftermath of the First World War. It contends that, despite the controversies that this issuearoused among railway executives and managers, housing employees and workers became a central chapter inthe company welfare programs. In addition, it seeks to demonstrate that railroad companies’ housingpolicieswere part of a larger debate on the social question and deserved major criticisms on the part ofimportant reformers of that period. This study is based on the analysis of a variety of railway companies andofficial documents -reports and journals-, papers and publications presented at the conferences and thebulletin of the Asociación Internacional Permanente del Congreso Sudamericano de Ferrocarriles(AIPCSFFCC),and the well-known report on the situation of the working classes in Argentina written by Juan Bialet Massé.
