In addition, it seeks to demonstrate that railroad companies’ housingpolicieswere part of a larger debate on the social question and deserved major criticisms on the part ofimportant reformers of that period. This study is based on the analysis of a variety of railway companies andofficial documents -reports and journals-, papers and publications presented at the conferences and thebulletin of the Asociación Internacional Permanente del Congreso Sudamericano de Ferrocarriles(AIPCSFFCC),and the well-known report on the situation of the working classes in Argentina written by Juan Bialet Massé. Este artículo examina el papel de las empresas ferroviarias en la promoción de la vivienda en Argentina entrela crisis de 1890 y la primera posguerra. Argumenta que, pese a las controversias que suscitaron entredirectivos y gerentes ferroviarios, estas medidas devinieron una prioridad en la agenda de programas de lascompañías diseñados para el bienestar de empleados y obreros. Procura demostrar que las políticas depromoción de vivienda de las compañías ferroviarias fueron parte de un debate más amplio sobre la cuestiónsocial y merecieron objeciones de parte de importantes intelectuales reformistas del período.
