Sumario:The objective of this paper is to characterize the historical evolution of film consumption and exhibition in Buenos Aires. We elaborate a chronology focusing on five aspects: display technology, the characteristics of the exhibiting companies, the physical space and the place of film consumption, and the relationship betw een the audience and the viewing experience. We also examine the process of transformation and denationalization in the ow nership of exhibiting companies. As for the physical space, w e consider the emergence of film at home through the TV, changes in the movie theatres (from the initial spread of movie theatres into neighbourhoods and their subsequent retreat into the multiplex). Finally, we consider the relationship betw een view ers and exhibition, that is, for example, the extent view ers control w hat, w hen and w here they can w atch movies. There are several histories of film in Argentina but we believe that there are yet no significant contributions from an angle that favours the analysis of exhibition and consumption.
