The first engi-neers were hired abroad and years later they were educated in the nationaluniversities. As soon as they gradu-ated, they were allocated in the various state agencies and staterailways, where two types of careers could be identified: some engineers heldtechnical poststhroughout the network and other occupied centralized tech-nical and management positions. The sources used for this study were the Proceedings of the Ministries of Interior and Public Works, Proceedings of the Railways, specialized journals and archives of the General Directorate of Railways and the General Administration of the State Railways. Con la introducción del ferrocarril en Argentina, los ingenieros se convirtieron en una burocracia técnica encargada del estudio, la construcción y el funcionamiento operativo de aquel e incluso se ocuparon de su gestión. La formación de esta tecnocracia especializada estuvo en sintonía con la consolidación del Estado Nacional. Los primeros ingenieros se contrataron en el exterior hasta que algunos años después comenzaron a ser formados en las universidades del país. Apenas graduados pronto tuvieron cabida en los diferentes organismos y ferrocarriles estatales. Así, es posible identificar dos tipos de carreras: por un lado, las de quienes se desempeñaron en funciones técnicas a lo largo de red y por el otro, las de aquellos que ocuparon cargos técnicos y de gestión centralizados.
