Sumario:The paper deals with the social dimension of cooperatives considered from the legal point of view and with special reference to the Argentinean case. For that purpose, it reflects upon the origins and evolution of cooperatives, their underlying principles and the documents issued by international organizations such as the UN and the ILO as well as upon the treatment given to cooperatives by the organizations of regional economic integration. The conclusions point out the differences between cooperatives and commercial and State enterprises underlining the capacity of cooperatives for resilience to the economic crisis because they operate in the benefit of their members, who are, at the same time, the owners and the users of their services. Finally it warns about the risks of cooperatives becoming a State instrument.
