| Sumario: | The method to study and to teach law has evolved in the same way as societies have to face new situations and challenges. However, in some cases, dominant groups imposed the adoption or transplant of institutions, concepts or structures, as it happened in Japan. There, successive foreign elements determined profound changes in its society and its law. Due to foreign powers present after the middle of the XIX Century, the European university system for graduate and undergraduate law studies was implemented; and, later on, when the Second World War ended, the United States scheme turned out to be the new model. In any case, as Japanese culture is deeply rooted in its society, it could not be put aside. By the end of the XX Century, the process to draft a new reform within the judicial area began, which was also extended to the educational environment for legal studies, the national bar exams and the professional training programs prior to the exercise of the profession. The analysis of the reform recommended by 2001, whose implementation began in 2004, is the objective of the present article. We will also address the different stages undergone by legal studies since the Meiji Era; subsequently, law studies in universities will be scrutinized, and we will provide an overview of how the educational reform has been put into effect, its projections and relevant characteristics; including achievements and shortcomings that at present have been detected. |
