Sumario:Verbesina encelioides (Cav.) Benth. & Hook. (Compositae) is a species broadly distributed in Argentina commonly known as «girasolcito» or «mirasolcito del campo» because it presents yellow flowers in pedunculate terminal heads. The objective of the present work is to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of this species against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria and Candida albicans. Increasing concentrations of the vegetable extract were used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) by means of dilution in culture broth method, and the minimum bactericide concentration (MBC). To determine the antimicrobial activity, the following microorganisms were used: Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, S. intermedius, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus agalactiae, Salmonella typhimurium, Citrobacter freundii, Proteus spp., Escherichia coli, Candida albicans. These results, obtained under our working conditions, demonstrate that the methanolic extract of the heads of Verbesina encelioides has a more notorious antimicrobial activity against Gram positive microorganisms and Candida albicans than against Gram negative bacteria, having no activity against Citrobacter freundii.\n
