Sumario:This chapter aims to deepen the understanding of the center-periphery divergences within developing or peripheral countries, in terms of some structural characteristics of these periph- eral economies and their regional innovation systems. Firstly, we discuss and combine some conceptual elements of Latin American structuralism and the regional innovation systems approach to provide a definition or identification of some of the main features of peripheral RIS (in developing or peripheral countries). Secondly, this conceptual contribution is complemented with a review of different quantitative and qualitative studies that seek to identify and characterize peripheral regional innovation systems in Argentina, in some cases emphasizing the diversity or heterogeneity of peripheral situations. Finally, we highlight the main con- clusions of the chapter and suggest some theoretical, methodological and policy challenges ahead.
