Sumario:This paper provides a review and reflection on what areas are critical for the autonomous development of women in Latin America due to the presence of multiple sociocultural and subjective barriers that preclude the empowerment of this population sector. Three axes identified by the Observatory of gender equality in Latin America and the Caribbean (OIG), which are today identified as prevailing goals within the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are taken as a criterion. I analyzed the way in which these barriers are hide, reinforce and hold within the framework of a culture predominantly sexist and the implications that this may have on the social, emotional and physical well-being of women in different contexts. Eventually becomes a reflection towards the aspects that become fundamental in the possibility to promote a full autonomy in women.
