Among them, rural tourism appears as an umbrella concept that brings together multiple sub-modalities, all linked to rural areas as a setting for development. These practices involve diverse communities, dynamics, and elements that shape and recreate local heritage, integrating into a specific landscape and territory. The promotion of rural areas, their landscapes, heritage, and ways of life through rural tourism requires detailed knowledge of their characteristics, differences, and theoretical-conceptual relationships, so that their implementation and/or materialization is consistent in practice. On this basis, the objective of this research article is to present the current state of the art on the notion of rural tourism, interpreting the connections between the different associated concepts. To this end, a qualitative methodology is used, based on a critical analysis of the literature available in open access databases. The final reflections underscore the importance of accurately understanding each conceptual category and the territorial dimension they occupy, which would allow for more effective management in practice.

En el ámbito del turismo suele recurrirse a distintas modalidades y actividades que conforman la práctica turística. Entre ellas, el turismo rural aparece como un concepto paraguas que reúne múltiples submodalidades, todas vinculadas al espacio rural como escenario de desarrollo. Estas prácticas involucran diversas comunidades, dinámicas y elementos que configuran y recrean el patrimonio local, integrándose en un paisaje y en un territorio específico. La puesta en valor de lo rural, sus paisajes, su patrimonio y sus formas de vida, a través del turismo rural requiere un conocimiento detallado de sus características, diferencias y relaciones teórico-conceptuales, de modo tal que su implementación y/o materialización resulte coherente en la práctica. Sobre esta base, el objetivo del trabajo es presentar un estado de la cuestión sobre la noción de turismo rural, interpretando las conexiones entre los distintos conceptos asociados. Para ello se emplea una metodología cualitativa, basada en un análisis crítico de bibliografía disponible en bases de datos de acceso libre. Las reflexiones finales subrayan la importancia de comprender con precisión cada categoría conceptual y la dimensión territorial que ocupan, lo que permitiría una gestión más eficaz en la práctica. No campo do turismo, geralmente se faz referência às modalidades e atividades que compõem a prática turística. O turismo rural é apresentado como um termo abrangente que engloba uma infinidade de possíveis submodalidades, caracterizadas pelas áreas rurais como cenário para o desenvolvimento.Por sua vez, elas compreendem várias práticas, sociedades e elementos que moldam e (re)criam o patrimônio local, que se unem e se incorporam a uma paisagem, a um território. Essa visibilidade das áreas rurais, de suas paisagens e de seu patrimônio por meio do turismo rural requer uma compreensão detalhada de suas características e diferenças, bem como de suas relações teóricas e conceituais, a fim de permitir uma materialização coerente na prática.Nesta base, as noções conceituais associadas às áreas rurais são apresentadas neste artigo de pesquisa, e suas ligações são analisadas e interpretadas. É utilizada uma metodologia qualitativa. As principais reflexões confirmam a importância de interpretar adequadamente cada categoria conceitual, sua dimensão e a escala territorial que ocupa. Isso se traduziria em um manejo e gestão eficientes na prática.
