| Sumario: | This study analyses the reading and writing skills of 231 first-year students at the Technological University of Uruguay (UTEC) in 2025, based on the diagnostic report from the Academic Writing Centre of the Language Programme. The results of the initial diagnostic test indicate that, although students show strengths in locating information, they face significant challenges in inferential and critical reading comprehension. In the area of writing, the main difficulties are detected in cohesion, coherence, punctuation, and spelling. The study complements these findings with teachers' perceptions of these weaknesses and concludes with specific suggestions for strengthening training in these areas, including the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence, academic literacy, multimodal literacy, and consideration of the institutional and teachers' role in the ongoing development of these skills. |
