Sumario: | The aim of this paper is to illuminate some of the mechanisms that work as stabilizers in the cirujeo-the way in which are know the informal garbage collectors-in the City of Buenos Aires. The article is based on the fieldwork with an ethnographic approach that I had done between 2002 and 2008. The paper focuses on how cirujas and intermediaries and how cirujas and clients generate, maintain and configure durable relations. The present text explain how all the actors construct reciprocal obligations that appear invested of morality, generate debts and produce the impossibility to leave the relation without some cost and in the way that the predictability is created. Contrary to the views that believe that is an activity that is easy entry and exit (view often shared by the cirujas), this paper explain how for living from the informal garbage collector there is a considerable work requirement of generation and maintenance of stable relationships. These relations produce interdependences between the different actors that create obligations between all links of the circuit. In turn, this position allows me to mark the boundaries of the structure of the activity and the expectations of those who are dedicated to the cirujeo. |
