In recent years it has become evident that many of the processes and metabolic pathways of plant nitrogen metabolism are regulated by the concentration of all or several amino acids and amides. The role of amino acids and amides in the regulation of nitrate and ammonium uptake, nitrate reduction, ammonium incorporation, protein metabolism and N remobilization is discussed. It is proposed that as the free amino-acid concentrations are dependent on the plant N status, changes in their cytoplasmic concentration may be involved in the regulation of plant growth and N uptake.
