Sumario:Liquid crystals constitute a fourth state of aggregation of the matter that share with the liquids their fluency and with the crystalline solids the long range order. One of the two types of liquid crystals, lyotropics, are found in cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations, as well as in biological systems. In this work an updating relating to the characteristic and identification of the main lyotropic phases that appear in some systems constituted by amphiphiles and water is presented.
