The goal of this paper is to examine the archaeological correlate of the use of a specifc type of weaponry in a XIXth century battle. In particular, we analyze materials related to the use of feld artillery –different types of ammunition and primers- found in the archaeological investigation of the Cepeda battlefeld. This battle took place on October 23, 1859, between the armies of the Argentine Confederacy and the rebellious Buenos Aires Province. The methodological procedures included the use of published and unpublished written sources, the characterization of materials from private collections, as well as the typological and spatial analysis of the artifacts found as part of our own research. Based on the data recovered, we assessed the material signature resulting from the use of feld artillery, as well as the potential and limitations of this material record to inform about the development of the battle. |
