This is an explanation about why and how I started to work with diplomatic documentation as a complement to trade statistics for the study of exports between the last decade of the 19th century and the end of the First World War. Likewise, it is, on the one hand, an example of the impact that the approach of this kind of sources has had on the specific results of my project and, on the other, a reflection on the possibilities that the use of non-traditional sources has on economic history researches. Este artículo describe mi experiencia con algunas Secciones del Archivo del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Culto de Argentina en una investigación de historia económica. Se trata de una explicación acerca de por qué y cómo comencé a trabajar con fuentes diplomáticas como complemento de las estadísticas oficiales de comercio para el estudio de las exportaciones entre la última década del siglo XIX y el final de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Asimismo, reviste, por un lado, un ejemplo del impacto que el abordaje de este tipo de documentación ha tenido en los resultados concretos de mi proyecto y, por el otro, una reflexión acerca de las posibilidades que el uso de fuentes no tradicionales abre sobre pesquisas de historia económica.
