First of all, it will present different theoretical perspectives which show different approaches such as: studies on specific issues, urban studies, social and anthropological orientations, and economic studies. It will also take into account modern historiographical trends which include a variety of sources. Finally, it will focus on the evolution of the medieval city and the characteristics of urban planning, social policy and the ways citizens and social groups in it arise and express themselves. El artículo se propone ofrecer un panorama de la ciudad medieval mediante diversas instancias. En primer lugar presentando planteos teóricos que se resuelven a través de diversos abordajes. Esto resulta en: Estudios que tratan temas específicos, estudios de urbanística, estudios de orientación social y antropológica, estudios de carácter económico que implican particulares metodologías de trabajo. Se presenta también la tendencia de la historia de incorporar el estudio de fuentes muy variadas. A ello se agrega una propuesta que comporta hitos para el estudio de la evolución de la ciudad medieval y un rápido análisis de la aparición y características –urbanísticas, políticas y sociales de las formas ciudadanas y de los grupos que en ella surgieron y se expresaron de manera peculiar.
