The translation of verbs of shinning: brief contrastive analysis of English and Spanish in a novel by J.K. Rowling

Our work finds inspiration in studies by authors such as Cifuentes Férez (2013), and Rojo and Valenzuela (2000, 2001), who contrast — based on Talmy’s discoveries — English and Spanish, and analyze what information is lost (or not) in translations in this language pair (in the first case, in relatio...

Rowling La traducción de los verbos de brillar del inglés: breve análisis contrastivo del inglés y el español a partir de una novela de J. K. Rowling Argüello Pitt, Matías Our work finds inspiration in studies by authors such as Cifuentes Férez (2013), and Rojo and Valenzuela (2000, 2001), who contrast — based on Talmy’s discoveries — English and Spanish, and analyze what information is lost (or not) in translations in this language pair (in the first case, in relation to motion events and, in the second case, with a focus on “verbs of saying”). Our research intends to provide a first approximation to the analysis of verbs of shining. The corpus of the study consisted of 32 appearances, in the novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, of verbs of shining functioning as intransitive verbs in the role of head of the syntactic predicate of a clause, and their translations into Spanish. As regards the methodology used, we followed the three phases of a contrastive study (Ramón García, 2001), and we concluded that, in most of the cases, the information lexicalized in a “shining scene” is neither lost in a translation into Spanish, as usually happens in the translation of motion events, nor added, as usually happens with verbs of saying. Our work presents other preliminary conclusions.
