Architecture transforms along with the society that creates it, hence the importance of historical documentation as it allows us to reconstruct this sociocultural process over time. Numerous archives, in addition to safeguarding valuable information on the historical evolution of society and its cultural, political or economic transformation, preserve documents that attest to the foundation and development of human settlements and their original architecture. The article addresses from a critical reflection, the importance of historical archives as documentation centers that allow the knowledge and reconstruction of the civil architecture of the New Spanish viceroyalty. Los archivos históricos sin pretenderlo, remiten invariablemente a la historia de la arquitectura, pues ésta forma parte del proceso evolutivo de la humanidad y de su desarrollo cultural. La arquitectura se transforma a la par de la sociedad que la crea, de ahí la importancia de la documentación histórica al permitir reconstruir ese proceso sociocultural a través del tiempo. Numerosos archivos además de resguardar información valiosa sobre el devenir histórico de la sociedad y su transformación cultural, política o económica, conservan documentos que dan fe de la fundación y desarrollo de los asentamientos humanos y de la primigenia arquitectura de los mismos. El artículo aborda desde una reflexión crítica, la importancia de los archivos históricos como centros de documentación que permiten el conocimiento y reconstrucción de la arquitectura civil del virreinato novohispano.
