En este texto intentaremos dar cuenta de los avances realizados en la deconstrucción del fenómeno caudillista, analizando los aportes más relevantes realizados por la historiografía política en los últimos 25 años. El abandono de las miradas evolucionistas y una mayor atención a los aspectos consensuales han permitido notables progresos en la comprensión de la política en la primera mitad del siglo XIX, aunque se intentarán señalar algunas trabas aún pendientes para concluir el desmantelamiento de esa tradición cultural.
