With this purpose is carried out an exam of the contents, strategies and some of the activities unwrapped by the students of the male schools of the city of Buenos Aires and their campaign among 1800 and 1860. As fruit of the analysis variations in the character and the perceptions generated on the first letters are suggested. By way of hypothesis it is suggested that some particularities of the first letters of principles of the XIX century were altered toward 1860. This rénovation -itself significant- was not an independentproduct of changes in the technological level, but rather it was a traffic accompanied by modifications in the institutional sphere. More specifically, the renovated state profile toward halffilled of the XIX century would have been linked with the alterations perceived in the environment of the first letters. La educación elemental es abordada aquí a través del análisis de las condiciones de enseñanza y ejercitación de la lectura y la escritura en el Río de la Plata durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX. Con este propósito se realiza un examen de los contenidos, las estrategias y algunas de las actividades desenvueltas por los alumnos de las escuelas de varones de la ciudad de Buenos Aires y su campaña entre fines del siglo XVIII y mediados del siguiente. Como fruto del análisis se indican variaciones en el carácter y las percepciones generadas sobre las primeras letras -es decir, acerca de la lectura y la escritura. A modo de hipótesis se sugiere que algunas particularidades de las primeras letras de principios del siglo XIX fueron alteradas hacia 1860. Esta renovación -que en sí misma es significativa- no fue un producto independiente de cambios a nivel tecnológico o escriturario, sino que fue un tránsito acompañado por modificaciones en la esfera institucional. Más específicamente, el renovado perfil estatal desenvuelto hacia mediados del siglo XIX habría estado vinculado con las alteraciones percibidas en el ámbito de las primeras letras.
