We employ conceptions about translation, reading, and foreign language teaching. Our method includes the application of a questionnaire and interviews in a biology class of the Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA), content analysis, and practical reading of an article in the abovementioned area by the students, in relation to which we elaborate questions parameterized according to Barrett’s taxonomy. Results show that the idea of a “global” English exerts pressure so that it imposes itself (in a limiting way) within the university context, despite the lack of previous training. When students use machine translation as a reading strategy, for example, they do so from a problematic conception of language and translation.
