An inquiry based on drawings and explanations was carried out with 292 primary and secondary students and with teachers of all levels. The responses were classified into mental models categories. A small evolution was detected during schooling and the presence of similar conceptions in both groups. However, significant differences were identified in relation to the astronomical reference frame used predominantly by each one of them. The results suggest the revision of the way in which these contents are developed in schools and in preservice teacher education. En este trabajo se analiza la evolución de los modelos mentales presentes en estudiantes y docentes acerca de las causas del día y la noche, las estaciones del año y las fases lunares. Se llevó a cabo una indagación basada en dibujos y explicaciones con 292 estudiantes de primaria y secundaria y con docentes de todos los niveles. Se clasificaron las respuestas obtenidas en categorías de modelos mentales, detectándose una escasa evolución durante la escolaridad y la presencia de concepciones similares en ambos grupos. Sin embargo, se identificaron diferencias en cuanto al sistema de referencia astronómico utilizado en forma preponderante por cada uno de ellos. Los resultados sugieren una revisión del modo en que son desarrollados estos contenidos en el ámbito escolar y en la formación docente.
