On the materiality of the encounters of the Tupi-Guaraní with the other

The first objective of the article is to present the latest advances in archaeology vis-à-vis groups who resemble the guarani linguistic and culturally, but who occupied the distant lands of southern Amazonia. description The first objective of the article is to present the latest advances in archaeology vis-à-vis groups who resemble the guarani linguistic and culturally, but who occupied the distant lands of southern Amazonia. In this context we identify a distinct scenario from the archaeology of the Lower Paraná, with a more intense flux of elements flowing amongst different ceramic producing societies since the beginning of the Christian era. Subsequently, we present an interpretative outline of the expansion process of the Tupi-Guarani from eastern Amazonia towards the Brazilian coast, where they apparently occupied the territories formerly inhabited by producers of Incised-Modelled ceramics, leaving traces of interchanges. Finally, we discuss the processes of “guaranization” in the light of two Guarani sites of the Lower Paraná and evaluate, preliminary, if there is material evidence that these groups interacted with other regional populations during their dispersion over the La Plata Basin.
