Malacological ornaments in funeral contexts of hunter-gatherers in the Western Pampa.: Production, origin, chronological changes and differential use.

A set of representative malacological artifacts (N=323) recovered in a pre-Hispanic cemetery linked to hunter-gatherers of the western Pampa (Chenque I site) was reviewed. In order to contribute to the taxonomic identity and origin of the raw materials and compare them with other sites in the region...

description A set of representative malacological artifacts (N=323) recovered in a pre-Hispanic cemetery linked to hunter-gatherers of the western Pampa (Chenque I site) was reviewed. In order to contribute to the taxonomic identity and origin of the raw materials and compare them with other sites in the region or extra-regional, the morphological and manufacturing characteristics of these elements were analyzed. The provenance of the materials studied is from multiple sources, which include the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and also involve continental hydrographic and terrestrial systems, which reinforces the previous interpretation about the existence of a network of human relations with great circulation of extra-regional elements. Finally, the analysis of the techno-morphological variability of these artifacts according to chronology (older burials from the pre-hiatus period versus more recent ones from the post-hiatus period) allows us to recognize identity elements of these funerary spaces, and highlight others that mark chronological differences, which would be associated with different burial practices between both periods and with the fact that these elements make up special grave goods that transmit social differences between individuals.
