In order to carry out a comparative study between these two species, the aim of this work was to provide the first statistically based morphometric studies of karyotypes of A. muricata var. dentata and A. cordobensis var. cordobensis as well as analyze meiotic behavior of them.
M&M: Mitotic metaphases were obtained from roots pretreated with 8-hydroxyquinoline. Chromosomes were stained with 2% propionic hematoxylin. Estimation of pollen grain viability was performed with the Müntzing staining.
Results: All analyzed populations had a chromosome number 2n = 20, symmetrical karyotypes and karyotypic formula consisting of 20 m (metacentric) chromosomes. Adesmia muricata var. dentata and A. cordobensis var. cordobensis have different average chromosome lengths. Furthermore, A. muricata var. dentata presented satellites, not observed in A. cordobensis. In both taxa analyzed, the meiotic behavior was regular, and the viability of the pollen grains was close to 90%.
Conclusions: Chromosome counts, karyotypes, meiotic behavior and viability of pollen grains are novel data. Cytogenetic characteristics allow these related species to be distinguished. |

Introducción y objetivos: Adesmia conforma parte de la flora nativa de Argentina e incluye aproximadamente 100 especies. Entre las especies del género, Adesmia muricata var. dentata y A. cordobensis var. cordobensis son hierbas inermes de la serie Muricatae que se distribuyen ampliamente en el noroeste de Argentina. Los estudios citogenéticos para el género son escasos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue proveer los primeros estudios morfométricos con base estadística de los cariotipos de A. muricata var. dentata y A. cordobensis var. cordobensis, así como analizar sus comportamientos meióticos, con el fin de realizar un estudio comparativo entre estas dos especies afines. M&M: Las metafases mitóticas se obtuvieron de raíces pretratadas con 8-hidroxiquinoleína. Los cromosomas se tiñeron con hematoxilina propiónica 2%. La estimación de la viabilidad de los granos de polen se llevó a cabo con la tinción de Müntzing. Resultados: Todas las poblaciones analizadas presentaron número cromosómico 2n = 20, cariotipos simétricos y fórmula cariotípica compuesta por 20 cromosomas m (metacéntricos). Adesmia muricata var. dentata y A. cordobensis var. cordobensis presentan diferentes longitudes cromosómicas medias. Además, A. muricata var. dentata presentó satélites, no observados en A. cordobensis var. cordobensis. En ambos taxones analizados el comportamiento meiótico fue regular y la viabilidad de los granos de polen cercana al 90%. Conclusión: Los recuentos cromosómicos y cariotipos, el comportamiento meiótico y la viabilidad de los granos de polen son datos novedosos. Las características citogenéticas permiten distinguir estas especies afines.
