In the Christian imagination, there was a wide range of actions to shorten the time spent in Purgatory and thus gain access to Paradise. The Hispanic Monarchy embraced this worldview and implanted it in its overseas territories. The burial of bodies on the floors of churches had been practiced for centuries. It was believed that prayers and masses would help the dead reach salvation. This article aims to address these elements of the Christian imaginary with regard to funeral practices for the city of Santa Fe de la Veracruz during the second half of the 18th and early 19th centuries.
