It focuses on the eviction methods used against low-income sectors living in these houses and the various illegal activities attributed to them. To shed light on these issues, I will draw upon my decade-long ethnographic research conducted with house squatters in the Abasto neighborhood between 1993 and 2003. Throughout this period I had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the process of socio-urban renewal taking place in that area. I will argue that the stigmatization of different urban low-income sectors coincides with prevailing sentiments during a specific historical period.
