Silent and not very visible, the work of community agents contributes to closing gaps between institutions and the community. Despite the difficulties of field work, the work of community agents in health promotion contributes to building a society with greater equity and to enhancing the health of individuals. Given the complexity of the work of the community agent, especially in some situations or with some populations, a particular profile with leadership, sensitivity, vocation, and respect is required. This article reviews some key concepts around the work of community agents, in addition to symbolizing their role as a hyper-connected node for health promotion within the complex health system. En las últimas décadas, el rol de los agentes comunitarios en salud ha cobrado gran relevancia dentro de los sistemas de salud. Silencioso y poco visible, el trabajo de los agentes comunitarios contribuye a cerrar brechas entre instituciones y comunidad. Pese a las dificultades del trabajo de campo, la tarea de los agentes comunitarios en promoción de la salud contribuye a construir una sociedad con mayor equidad y a potenciar la salud de los individuos. Dada la complejidad del trabajo del agente comunitario, en especial, en algunas situaciones o con algunas poblaciones, se requiere de un perfil particular donde destaca el liderazgo, la sensibilidad, la vocación y el respeto. El presente artículo revisa algunos conceptos claves en torno a la labor de los agentes comunitarios, además de simbolizar su papel como un nodo hiperconectado de promoción de la salud dentro del complejo sistema sanitario. Nas últimas décadas, o papel do agente comunitário de saúde ganhou grande relevância nos sistemas de saúde. Silencioso e pouco visível, o trabalho dos agentes comunitários é transcendente para a promoção da saúde individual, da saúde comunitária e da saúde pública. Apesar das dificuldades, a atuação dos agentes comunitários contribui para a melhoria da saúde da comunidade por meio do acesso ao atendimento, do compartilhamento de informações oportunas e da promoção da saúde das pessoas. Por causa da complexidade do trabalho comunitário, principalmente em algumas situações e com algumas populações, o agente comunitário de saúde requer um perfil particular onde se destacam liderança, sensibilidade, vocação e respeito. Este artigo reflete sobre conceitos-chave sobre os agentes comunitários, seu papel na promoção da saúde e como um nó articulador entre a comunidade e o sistema de saúde.
