The most remarkable aspects of the book are emphasized and the traditional belief of Famatina as inexhaustible source of metals whoseexploitation would develop La Rioja province is refuted. Description covers the district of La Mejicana and neighbouring areas, in whichthe most significant mining work took place. Due that 19th, 20th and 21st centuries have provided more information that earlier years, agreater attention is paid to their events, analyzing the causes that led to disaster of the late and more technical exploitations, which wereworked in the most advantageous conditions, at least theoretically. Este artículo resume una presentación comentada y discutida del libro La minería del Famatina (La Rioja, Argentina),efectuada en público en el V CAHGEO como orador invitado. En él se destacan los aspectos más reseñables rompiéndose la tradicional visión de la sierra como una fuente inagotable de minerales metálicos cuya explotación supondría inequívocamente el desarrollo de la provincia riojana. La descripción abarca el distrito de La Mejicana y áreas limítrofes, lugares en los que, históricamente, han tenido lugar las explotaciones más importantes. Debido a la mayor existencia de información se hace especial hincapié en los acontecimientos mineros de los siglos XIX, XX y XXI, analizando las causas que llevaron al fracaso a las últimas y más tecnificadas explotaciones de comienzos del siglo XX que operaron, al menos teóricamente, en la situación más favorable.
