This historical period was distinguished by the accentuation of social inequalities on the island and the rest of the Caribbean, obligating the writers of the time to utilize structural and linguistic resources typical of the Baroque esthetic of the 17th c. They used language that was precious, hermetic, allegorical, and symbolic, in order to avoid censure. As evidence of this phenomena, this investigation analyzes two poems by the Puerto Rican writer Jose de Jesus Dominguez, Las huries blancas (1886) and Ecos de siglo (1889), in order to identify Neo Baroque elements within them. Este ensayo propone que, en Puerto Rico, durante los orígenes del Movimiento Modernista Hispanoamericano de finales del siglo XIX, se dio el segundo afloramiento de la estética barroca en la literatura latinoamericana. Este período histórico se distinguió por la acentuación de las desigualdades sociales en la Isla y el resto del Caribe, obligando a los escritores a utilizar recursos estructurales y lingüísticos, propios de la estética barroca del siglo XVII, tales como el uso de un lenguaje preciosista, hermético, alegórico y simbólico con el fin de evitar la censura. Como evidencia de este fenómeno, esta investigación analiza dos poemas del escritor puertorriqueño José de Jesús Domínguez, Las huríes blancas (1886) y Ecos de siglo (1889), con la finalidad de identificar elementos neobarrocos presentes en los mismos.
